Brisbane Youth Plays: Past Productions And Bleep Quest At Ron Hurley Theatre
Play on Stage has always had a strong youth theatre spirit at heart. Across Paddington, Seven Hills and throughout Brisbane, young performers have stepped onto local stages to share stories shaped by their own voices and experiences. As we get ready for our next production in Seven Hills, it feels like the perfect moment to look back at the youth plays that have brought Brisbane families together in recent years.
And with Bleep Quest arriving very soon at the Ron Hurley Theatre in Seven Hills, we felt like now was a good time to look back on some of our past youth plays and the impact they have had on the young people of Brisbane.
Dear Adults…
Written by Virag Dombay and Harry Fritsch
First staged during the Brisbane Anywhere Festival in 2021, Dear Adults… invited audiences to listen closely to what young people really think.
Built around letters written from children to adults, this powerful verbatim work drew on real conversations with young people aged six-eighteen. It tackled the big questions children often carry but rarely get space to voice. From school pressures to global worries, the show created a platform where young perspectives were front and centre.
Audiences were encouraged to write their own letters after the performance, creating a shared exchange between generations.

What’s For Dinner
Written by Virag Dombay
Performed in 2022 at Brisbane Libraries and the Backbone Festival, What’s For Dinner brought family tensions to the table.
Set across a single meal, the story followed one family as secrets slowly surfaced between bites of food and bursts of laughter. The play captured something familiar to many Brisbane households. Dinner can be noisy, messy, and full of unexpected revelations.
Young performers connected strongly with this piece because it reflected everyday life. It allowed them to explore humour and vulnerability in equal measure while audiences recognised their own family dynamics on stage.
Act Your Age
Written by Virag Dombay and Harry Fritsch
Staged in 2023 at The Briswest Centre and PIP Theatre, Act Your Age explored a phrase that many young people hear far too often.
Through four distinct scenarios, the play examined moments where children and teens were told to behave differently simply because of their age. Inspired by interviews with local youth, the work took an imaginative and surreal approach to situations that felt very real.
For Brisbane audiences, it sparked conversation and encouraged empathy. It also gave young performers a chance to question the assumptions placed on them.
Lunchboxed In
Written by Virag Dombay and Harry Fritsch
Presented at The Briswest Centre in 2025, Lunchboxed In zoomed in on one of the most intense parts of a school day.
The play focused on two teenagers during their lunch break. Around a simple lunch table, friendships shifted, alliances formed and words carried weight. It was a reminder that some of the most important moments in young people’s lives happen in between classes.
After each performance, audience members were invited to write their own messages and place them inside a lunch box. That shared reflection made the experience especially meaningful for families across Brisbane.
The Wishing Well
Written by Virag Dombay and Jack Barrett
Also staged at The Briswest Centre in 2025, The Wishing Well followed Alma, a young girl who discovers something mysterious in her own backyard.
At its heart, the story explored hope and possibility. What happens when a wish might actually come true and what responsibilities come with that freedom.
Young audiences in Brisbane connected deeply with the show’s imaginative concept and idea of agency.
The Playground in the Sky
Written by Harry Fritsch
First performed at the Ron Hurley Theatre in 2024 and returning in 2025, The Playground in the Sky told a story shaped by resilience.
After disaster strikes and familiar spaces disappear, a group of children look upwards to create a new place to play. Through imagination and determination, they discover more than just a playground.
For families in Brisbane, especially those who understand the impact of floods and shared history, this story resonated strongly. It offered hope without ignoring hardship.
