What’s on at Play on Stage These September School Holidays?

The September Brisbane school holidays are almost here, and we have plenty happening at Play on Stage for young people who would like to spend part of their break making theatre.

This September, we are running two school holiday drama programs from our Paddington studio. Whether your child would love several days to develop their own show or wants to see what they can create in a single day, both programs give young people plenty of opportunities to use their imaginations and share their ideas with others.

Step Inside The Dream Factory

From Monday 21 September to Thursday 24 September, The Dream Factory will take students from Prep to Grade 6 through the process of creating their own original play.

Participants will be divided into age appropriate groups, with Early Primary students from Prep-to-Grade 2 and Middle and Upper Primary students from Grades 3-to-6 working on separate performances.

Across four days, students will explore playwriting and improvisation before bringing their ideas into the rehearsal room. With support from our experienced facilitators, each group will develop an original piece of theatre and work together to prepare it for an audience.

At the end of the program, families will be invited to see what the students have created.

The Dream Factory runs from 9am to 3pm each day, giving young performers plenty of time to settle into the creative process and see how an idea can gradually become a finished piece of theatre.

Can You Make a Play in Just One Day?

For students looking for a shorter burst of creativity, our Play in a Day program returns on Friday 25 September.

Open to students from Prep to Grade 9, this one day program challenges participants to create a ten minute play in response to the stimulus One Wish.

Throughout the day, students will develop their devising and acting skills while building their story as a group. There will be characters to discover, scenes to shape and plenty of decisions to make before families arrive for the final performance.

Play in a Day runs from 9am to 3pm, with the finished work performed for friends and family during the final fifteen minutes of the program.

It is always exciting to see just how much theatre can be created between morning drop off and afternoon pick up!

And There’s More Theatre Coming in October

The creativity will continue after the holidays, with Play on Stage presenting our brand new Brisbane professional youth theatre production, The Paige Turner Bookshop, from 17 to 24 October at the Enoggera Performing Arts Centre.

Written by Harry Fritsch and directed by Virag Dombay, the play follows six young people who enter a mysterious neighbourhood bookshop looking for something good to read. What they find are stories they never expected and a bookshop owner who seems to know exactly which story each visitor needs.

It is a warm and playful celebration of reading, created for families to experience together.

So whether your young person would rather spend the holidays making a play themselves or your family would like to see young Brisbane performers take to the stage soon afterwards, there is plenty happening at Play on Stage this spring.

Registrations for our September school holiday programs are now open, with tickets for The Paige Turner Bookshop also available.
