At Play on Stage, our Brisbane musical theatre programs give young performers opportunities to build their skills in a welcoming environment where creativity comes first. Why Musical Theatre Is So Valuable for Young People
Musical theatre asks performers to think about far more than remembering lines or learning a song. Students need to listen to their ensemble, make clear character choices and communicate through their voice and body.
That combination can support confidence, coordination and focus while encouraging young people to express themselves creatively. Working towards a shared performance also develops ensemble awareness and gives students experience negotiating ideas, solving creative problems and supporting the people around them.
There is also plenty of room for play. Musical theatre allows students of all ages to experiment with larger characters, new styles of movement and different ways of telling stories. At Play on Stage, these skills are developed through practical singing, dancing and acting exercises before students apply what they have explored to scripts and improvisations.
Learning From Experienced Musical Theatre Practitioners
The people teaching musical theatre matter just as much as the curriculum itself.
Play on Stage's Head of Musical Theatre, Jack Barrett, has undertaken extensive musical theatre training, including a two year diploma at Valmy Academy. Alongside teaching, Jack continues to rehearse and perform professionally and has worked with companies including Phoenix Ensemble and Vox Arts. He has also directed and worked as a movement director across several Play on Stage productions.
That practical industry experience helps students understand how singing, acting and movement actually come together in performance. It is supported by Play on Stage's wider team of theatre educators and practitioners, who bring experience across directing, acting, education and creating original theatre with young people.
Musical Theatre Classes for Brisbane Kids
Our dedicated weekly Musical Theatre Class is designed for Upper Primary students in Grades 3 to 6.
Classes run on Fridays from 3:30pm to 5:00pm at our Paddington studio at Rosalie Baptist Church Hall, with doors opening from 3:00pm. Across the year, students develop their singing, dancing and acting skills while working towards performances in a local theatre venue.
During the first semester, students explore how to bring an existing text to life through acting, song and movement. In the second semester, the creative reins are handed increasingly to the students as they devise their own ten minute musical with guidance from their facilitator.
A Musical Theatre Pathway for Brisbane Teens
Teenagers interested in musical theatre can continue developing many of these performance skills through Play on Stage's Teen Acting Ensemble for students in Years 7 to 12.
The ensemble meets on Tuesday evenings from 5:30pm to 7:00pm in Paddington. While acting remains the program's primary focus, the ensemble welcomes teenagers with an interest in musical theatre and develops skills in movement, voice, character, improvisation and live performance that translate directly into musical productions. Students also work towards two original productions and a creative development reading each year.
