Fun Ways to Keep Your Child Creatively Engaged These Brisbane Summer Holidays

Summer in Brisbane brings long days, warm weather, and a wonderful stretch of time when your child can explore new ideas and let their imagination run free. If you are looking for ways to keep them creatively engaged while still enjoying the break, there are plenty of simple activities you can bring into your home. These little sparks of creativity can brighten the holidays and give your child something exciting to dive into between trips to the pool or visits with friends.

Create a Holiday Story Station

A story station invites your child to turn quiet moments into imaginative adventures. Gather coloured paper, pencils, magazines for cutouts, and a box of interesting prompts. Your prompts can include things like a curious creature they need to describe or a place they need to draw before adding a tiny story about what happens there.

This gives your child a playful way to practise storytelling while also encouraging them to create characters they care about. You might even set aside a time each afternoon when they can add a new page to their own holiday storybook.

Build a Mini Theatre at Home

Transform a corner of the living room into a makeshift stage using blankets, lamps, or a couple of chairs. Invite your child to put on a tiny play for you, whether it lasts thirty seconds or three minutes. Let them choose costumes from a dress-up box or create simple props from recycling items.

This kind of play helps children build confidence as they explore new voices and movements. It also gives them a fun way to express big ideas in a low-pressure space that feels safe and familiar.

Explore Creative Challenges

A creative challenge gives your child a short burst of inspiration to explore something new. Set a timer and invite them to make a creature using only sticks from the backyard. Ask them to recreate their favourite movie scene using toys they already have. Give them three random objects and challenge them to invent a character who might own them. These small activities give your child the chance to stretch their creative muscles while also enjoying the thrill of solving a playful puzzle.

Or… Join Us at Play on Stage These Holidays

If your child loves storytelling and performance, you can take their creativity even further by joining us at Play on Stage for our December holiday programs.

Our Kidsmas Theatre Production Program runs from Monday 15 December to Thursday 18 December for young people from Prep to Grade Six. Your child will work with our friendly facilitators to build their own original play inspired by the idea of Kidsmas. They will explore playwrighting, improvisation, acting, and ensemble-based collaboration before performing their creation in the final half hour of the program.

We also offer a Christmas Themed Theatresports day on Friday 19 December where your child can dive into improvisation and devising games with a festive twist. You can enrol in either session or join both at a discounted rate. If your child is ready for a summer holiday filled with performance, expression, and laughter, we would love to welcome them to Play on Stage. Enrol today!
